ACTHA Ride ...La Union Buckle Series, Las Cruces, NM

ACTHA La Union Buckle Series Rides -- December 2012

Once again the ACTHA folks got together and had a competition.  This time, instead of
La Union, NM, it was Las Cruces.  A new venue and it was a gorgeous weekend for riding.

If you're not familiar with ACTHA and are looking for a short trail ride with a few judged obstacles
to ride with friends, these competitions are definitely a great option.

Amy and I actually competed on Sunday (our second ACTHA ride together) and we had
a great time on trail and at most of the obstacles!

I'll be taking photos again at the February competition held at Miller's Equestrian near La Union, NM.

Come on out and volunteer to help, or ride with us!

Details on that ride can be found also on the ACTHA website, linked above.

Jim took this really great photo of Amy and Artemisia CF crossing the water obstacle.

This ride was held at Isaack's Ranch, near Las Cruces.  Great old adobe house still on the property.
Made for a great backdrop for photos too!

Lake Quichapa Pioneer Endurance Ride, Cedar City, Utah...

Lake Quichapa Pioneer Endurance Ride - Utah

This ride was awesome!  Scenery was beautiful, riders looked great and the trails were
spectacular.  Did I mention the food?  Jay and Chris from CJ Arabians prepared the meals...
Tri-Tip, Pulled Pork, BBQ Chicken and all the fixings the first night, then Cheese Tortellini, Spaghetti and meatballs, with all the fixings the second night.  WoW!  Put this ride on your calendar
next year...it's a winner!

The trails passed by Three Peaks, and went up Bumblebee Hill.  The fall scenery was
breathtaking.  The trees were already turning bright yellows and reds.  Gorgeous!
This is Mr. Lusk.  Junior rider who rode all three days.  So happy to be out there and loving every
minute of it.

Ride Manager Gwen Farmer used the proceeds from this ride for Cancer Charities.
Just like the Ft Stanton rides, we did portrait shoots for donations to the cause.  (See top photo also)
Here's Ann posing in the parking area of ride camp...even that area had fall colors going on!

Add this ride to your calendar next year.  It's worth the trip.

Sleeping in the Storm....

The following excerpt is from Mitch Albom's book, "Have a Little Faith".
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  It was taken from one of his Rabbi's sermons and included in his book.

  A nice reminder....

"A man seeks employment on a farm.  He hands his letter of recommendation to his new employer.  It reads simply, "He sleeps in a storm."

The owner is desperate for help, so he hires the man.  Several weeks pass, and suddenly, in the middle of the night, a powerful storm rips through the valley.  Awakened by the swirling rain and howling wind, the owner leaps out of bed.  He calls for his new hired hand, but the  man is sleeping soundly.  He dashes off to the barn.  He sees, to his amazement, that the animals are secure with plenty of feed.  He runs out into the field.  He sees the bales of wheat have been bound and are wrapped in tarpaulins.  He races to the silo.  The doors are latched and the grain is dry.  And then he understands.
 "He sleeps in a storm."

My friends, if we tend to the things that are important in life, if we are right with those we love and behave in line with our faith, our lives will not be cursed with the aching throb of unfulfilled business.  Our words will always be sincere, and our embraces will be tight.  We will never wallow in the agony of 'I could have, I should have.'  We can sleep in a storm.

And when it's time, our goodbyes will be complete."

I realize this is a little off my normal target for my photography blog, but every now and
then it's nice to put the priorities where they belong...

Why Do I Do This? ......

Why Do I Do This?

It's a question I've asked myself in recent weeks as I think about how I got here.  My photography, I mean.

I'm looking back on how it all started, the motivation it took to finally decide to go pro and charge for my work and the eventual direction it all took.

I do this because I lost a horse during a storm that about blew our farm away in Michigan.
I realized later that I only had a precious few photos of the horse that was lost.
I decided that would never happen again.

I do this because friends have animals that are like their children...
who are growing older and won't always be here to see in person.

I do this because friends should always have memories of friends.  Human and equine!

I do this because little boys grow up way too fast...

I do this because I may never pass this way again...

I do this for the laughter...

I do this because I preserve memories for friends...who miss their friends.

I do this because it's my passion...

...and one day to someone, somewhere, it will really matter.

I love what I do!

Cisco & Michelle...

They surprised me and brought a custom car for the after wedding photos!

I could not have been happier with the props we had on such a beautiful day.  Naturally, the sun was directly overhead, so we went in search of shade and boy did we find a great spot.

I loved Michelle's necklace.  So delicate and it went perfectly with her dress.

These two certainly had some great ideas on what they wanted for their perfect day.

At the last minute, I asked Cisco if I could borrow his badge...they loved how it was just something
different for the ring photos.  His profession is a big part of their lives...it should be in the photos!

Her chosen colors for the wedding were gorgeous!
So much fun spending time with you two!  Thanks for allowing
us to be a part of your special day.

Wishing you all the love in the world...

We all grow up too fast!

This is the season for elections, and as we ponder our decisions on leaders
we are reminded of the uncertainty of our times and even more focused on
what really matters.

Family and Friends...

Treating each other well...

Sharing love every chance we get...

Consider a portrait session of the special people in your life.

The Holidays are just around the corner...

Consider portraits of your family before time gets away.... you can never have too
many photos of family.

Ride the Divide Pioneer Endurance Ride - 2012 - Quemado, NM...

The 2012 Ride the Divide Endurance Ride was held again this year near
Quemado, NM.  The weather was a little blustery, but you sure can see the gorgeous
blue skies we also enjoyed!  The terrain is gorgeous, and trails are challenging but
well worth the trip!  Photo above is Carrie Miracle-Jordan, smiling as always!

Ride camp is breathtaking, and this particular morning, the wildfire smoke in the area
added to the morning colors...fires are everywhere in the southwest again this year, and are so
sad to see.

Brooke Conner and her horse on Day 1.  I think they're both smiling!

Join us near Quemado, NM again next May and we'll do this all over again!

Happy Father's Day...

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to all the Dad's out there!

Plan a day with your children, no matter how old they are!

No children nearby?

There are so many kids who long for adult companionship.

They're probably right in your neighborhood.

Blessings to all the Dad's on your special day....

Train...Chama, New Mexico

Can't really put my finger on what I love so much
about this train, but maybe it's the somewhat
spooky look the clouds moving in give the image...

It's always fun to go back and revisit older
images and just take them out and play with them a
little more.

You'll discover some old forgotten friends!

Hope everyone goes out this Memorial Day weekend
and captures their own memories!

Memories of your Children...

Memories of our Kids...

Consider a photo session for your children...another year of school is coming up
and the time goes by so quickly.

Whether you take the photos yourself, or hire a professional,
keep in mind that these are the things you'll go back to
time and time again, to reflect and remember the early years!

Take the kids to a location everyone recognizes and is comfortable in.
A favorite playground, or location helps to keep the fun in the photo session.

Friends or Family? ....and Washington State

Friends or Family?

We visited beautiful Washington State recently to see my friend of 42 years and her family.  We were both adopted and have shared that bond as long as we've known each other.

As you can see, the view in Washington is stunning, to say the least!  ...and this photo is now a 20 x 30 portrait hanging in my photography office!

My post today is actually about family,
or the potential fullness of it.

We have told our daughter since she was old enough to understand, that there will sometimes be friends in your life who may be closer to you than some family members.  It's true.

We have dear friends in Michigan who are family...but not legally.
Family all the same.

This post is about a blessed Easter weekend with family...yep the kind you have with friends.  Family all the same.

Sharing loss, love and realizing at our age that all that really matters anymore is getting to heaven, and capturing the memories of our short time shared together.

Family, friends, pets...it's all just love. Pure and simple.

We all shared a loss during our visit, Katie had left us all far
too early, but the richness of our time together was filling my heart to the brim with love and just sharing the pitfalls of this life...

with family

....even just for a weekend.

When you can catch up after months or years without seeing each other and it seems like yesterday...that's Family!

Bryan Peterson Photo Workshop 2012 - Tucson, AZ

I attended a Bryan Peterson photography workshop in Tucson last weekend,
and although it wasn't my genre of photography, it certainly opened my eyes
to other creative opportunities within the photography world.

I loved the chance to shoot new things, in new places and was stunned to see
how beautiful the City Hall complex is in downtown Tucson.

The City Hall complex is split into separate buildings, all very colorful and so much fun
to walk around and see.  Each area was named and numbered differently.

This is the garden area near the street.  I love the tiles on the steps!

This was the light coming in at sunrise outside Tucson where we began the workshop.

As bizarre as this looks, it was a great lesson on how to utilize
filters and create something different just by knowing your camera...
This was taken at 10:30 in the morning...looks like night time!

One of my favorites from the workshop!  Loved the richness of the colors.  Thanks to Bryan
Peterson for showing me this technique!

Until next time, Linda
